Mexican Car Insurance
I just needed to let everyone know a bit more about what Mexican car insurance covers and what it doesn't. I was at my folks barbecue recently, celebrating my birthday, and my dad asked me about my web business and my blogs. I told him a bit about what I do and how things are going, and he asked me what it was that he should know about Mexican car insurance, and more particularly to name a coverage that he didn't know about. My swift reply was that partial theft wasn't covered, and he asked what is partial theft? I mean how can you have a partial theft, either it was nicked or it wasn't, it sounds to me like being partly pregnant. that's the classic reply from most Americans traveling to Mexico and hearing about this for the 1st time, and so I gave my dear of dad an illustration of partial theft. Joe drives his new automobile with brand new chrome wheels into downtown Juarez, and parks his automobile along the street while he does some shopping. Joe returns from shopping and finds his new chrome wheels are missing, but the remainder of the auto is still there, or maybe it was actually the radio that is missing, or any other part of the auto, but the car itself is still there : that's partial theft. Well, my pa did not have anything nice to say of insurance firms, but that is normal for everyone. The point of the story is that if you travel to Mexico you want to remember that partial theft isn't covered. The vehicle must be completely gone for theft coverage to apply. Now, you and I'm able to have the philosophical debate about whether is should be covered, but that could be a completely different subject. Mexico is a fabulous place to vacation and to get out and enjoy life. Before you travel, ensure that you get Mexican car insurance, and that you know some of its restrictions. Partial theft isn't covered.

Why Do You Need A Mexican Car Insurance Education?

I just wanted to tell another story about the need for Mexican car insurance, and why it is that you need to know what it is that you are buying. Several years ago I sold a motorcycle insurance policy to Bob for his new Harley. He wanted to make sure that he had "full coverage" insurance. I wrote a policy that included both comprehensive and collision coverages, and a medical payments limit of five thousand dollars. The medical payments limit was the maximum that I could write for Bob. About nine months after the purchase of the insurance Bob had an accident. He laid his bike down in front of and oncoming pickup truck. Bob walked away from the accident with minor injuries, but his girlfriend, on the back of the bike, suffered serious injuries that required many months of hospitalization, and many surgeries. The oncoming truck was uninsured at the time of the accident. Bob came to me after the accident wanting all of her medical payments to be covered by his insurance. I informed him that his medical payment coverage would pay up to the policy limit of five thousand dollars, and that he had an additional twenty-five thousand dollars in coverage available to her under his uninsured motorist coverage. Unfortunately, her injuries far exceeded her available coverages. Bob was upset that not all of her expenses would be covered. I asked Bob: Up to what limit he expected the insurance to pay for her medical expenses? His answer was: Whatever is billed, into the millions of dollars. My answer to him was that he needed a health insurance policy not a property insurance policy in order to cover those type of expenses. Nobody wants to end up like Bob, but to avoid that you have to know what it is that you are buying and what it is that you need to buy. That is what the moral to the story is: Nobody know what Mexican car insurance covers and what it doesn't cover. You need to do some homework and find out.

From An Experienced Agent: Purchase Mexican Car Insurance Before You Leave For Mexico

It was quite a few years ago that I first started to sell insurance. Like most people that sell insurance in the United States I sell more domestic policies than international policies, but I bet that I sell more international policies than most insurance agents. I have been selling Mexican car insurance for about fifteen years now, and during that time I have learned a thing or two about what it covers and what it doesn’t cover. The first thing that I want to make sure that you know is that you do need to buy insurance for Mexico, before you travel there. Your proof of insurance card is referred to as proof of financial responsibility in statute. In Mexico failure to provide proof of financial responsibility is considered a felony, and that means that if you can’t show the police officer proof of Mexican insurance you will go to jail. I remember a family that purchased their homeowner’s insurance from me. It was up for renewal on the 19th of December, and the payment was due on the 19th of November. We talked about making a late payment around Thanksgiving time and again at the first of December. It seems that the family didn’t have enough money to pay for Christmas and insurance all at the same time. My heart went out to them, but I had to tell them that the policy would cancel on the 19th of December if they didn’t make their payment before then. On the 26th of December I received a phone call from the family. On Christmas Eve the tree caught on fire and burned the house to the ground. Everybody survived, but no physical possessions were ever recovered. The family never paid for their insurance, and instead bought Christmas presents with the insurance money. Some people make the same mistake when they travel to Mexico. They assume that because their insurance carrier will provide limited coverage while in Mexico that they don’t need a Mexican insurance policy. Don’t by souvenirs with your insurance money. Sometimes insurance is the cheapest thing that you can buy, or to put it another way it can be very expensive to not buy the right kind of insurance. I only sell for companies that have an AM Best rating of A+ and that have demonstrated a superior claims paying history. Your insurance agent may not know a thing about Mexican car insurance because he/she doesn’t need to know anything about it. Because I have been selling insurance for Mexico for so long I know what you need and can sell you the best thing at the best price.

Why Should I Have Mexican Car Insurance When I Travel To Mexico

A wonderful time can be had by the whole family during a vacation to Mexico. Whether you want to tour the various archeological sites and ruins or explore the pristine beaches, Mexico has something for everyone. It is a country that is stunning in its beauty, but its greatest attraction is its people, they are warm and friendly with a rich cultural heritage. Before you go to Mexico be sure that you prepare for the various legalities of an international trip, and one of those legalities is Mexican car insurance. Mexican car insurance can easily be purchased online from any number of different insurance companies. Now, before I go any further I want to make it crystal clear that you do in fact need to purchase an insurance policy from a Mexican insurance company. I know that some major carriers offer limited coverage within Mexico, this is usually limited to within twenty-five miles of the border. Some people assume that because their insurance policy will provide coverage in Mexico that they don't need to purchase additional insurance, but nothing could be further from the truth. In order for the government of Mexico to recognize the insurance as proof of financial responsibility it must be issued by a Mexican insurance company. Your United States policy is not considered valid by the Mexican government. It is important that your policy is recognized by the Mexican government because of the Mexican legal system. Your United States policy is not considered valid by the Mexican government. There are some coverage differences between the Mexican and United States policies. Legal Aid and Travel Expense will be listed on the application as optional coverages. Please do not consider them to be optional, because they are essential. Without both of these coverages you will be responsible for all legal expenses until liability is determined. Remember that bit about being guilty until proven innocent, it applies here as well. Don't forget to check this particular box, because you want this coverage. The other recommendation that I have is that you purchase a combined single limit of not less than one hundred thousand dollars. Because pain and suffering and emotional distress are not paid in Mexico bodily injury claims are usually less than those in the United States. A single limit policy allows a greater percentage of the claim to be applied to property damage as would normally be the case in a Mexican claim. The other difference seen in Mexican car insurance is the exclusion for Vandalism and Partial Theft. This means that for theft coverage to apply the entire car must be missing and not just parts of it, like the radio or tires. Vandalism is not covered, so that the broken windshield or the keyed car will be the owner's responsibility. Please have an enjoyable vacation while in Mexico. It is one of the most spectacular places on earth. One of the ways to ensure that your vacation goes as well as you would like it to purchase the right Mexican car insurance.

Why Should I Buy Mexican Car Insurance?

Picture
There are a lot of differences between the United States and Mexico, but they are the same in this one respect:  you must have proof of insurance in your car.  Additionally, a United States insurance card will not be enough because it will not be recognized by the government of Mexico.  You must carry Mexican car insurance written by a Mexican insurance company.

Some major insurance carriers in the United States will cover an accident within a short distance of the Mexican border, that distance is usually twenty-five miles.  There are some people that believe that because they will not be going very far into Mexico that they don't need Mexican car insurance.  The real question is not whether or not the accident will be covered, but whether or not the insurance will be recognized by the Mexican officials as proof of financial responsibility.  Any policy underwritten in the United States will NOT be recognized as proof of financial responsibility.

What's the big deal if the Mexican cop doesn't like my insurance card? He'll probably just write me a ticket that I don't ever have to pay and I can go on my way.  Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.  If you are involved in a accident in Mexico and cannot provide adequate proof of financial responsibility you will be incarcerated until you can.  I don't know about you, but I don't want to spend my vacation in a Mexican jail.

So now that I've established why you need to buy Mexican car insurance I bet your wondering where it is that you can purchase it, and how much it will cost.  The answer to the second question is that policies can be purchased for as long as you need them, from one day to one year.  The price will obviously vary depending on the time period that you purchase, but the insurance is not expensive, in fact it is usually quite reasonable.
